What was Christmas like in the past?

This week Nell's dad (Kevin) and Mr Taylor's dad came to talk to the class about what Christmas was like when they were a boys. Kevin told us what Chistmas was like in Texas when he was growing up. He said it was similair to Scotland except for the weather!!! We saw a photo of his Christmas tree decorated with Christmas cards. We thought that was a good idea.

Then Mr Taylor's dad told us what Christmas was like in his house when he was a boy. He did not have fairy lights for  his family tree because they did not have electricity. He did not get many presents. If they did get a big present his dad would have made it for him and his sister. Christmas dinner was a big treat and it was always goose on the menu and not turkey.

Christmas Post Office Visit

Posted by Picasa

In our class we have our own Christmas shop and post office that where we play and learn. It is a lot of fun learning when you play. We decided to visit a real Post offce this week. Wow! What a busy place: vans leaving and vans arriving with letters and parcels. We learned how the letters and parcels are sorted and how they get delivered to our homes. We even saw letters addressed to Santa at the North Pole. We learned so much. Thank you to Mr Hall and all the hard working staff at Stromness sorting office. We now have some great ideas for our own post office. Please look at the photos on the link at the side.

We have been learning about winter festivals of light and to day we visited the Parish Church to find out how Christmas is celebrated. We saw the Advent candles and a model of the Nativity as well. We played a quiz and Billy, the minister gave us juice and biscuits. We have included some photos of the trip as well. They are on the side of this blog. Enjoy!

Hanukka the Jewish Festival of Light

This week we have been learning about the Jewish festival of Light called Hanukka. We planned and made our own Hanukiahs.
There are eight candles one for each day of the festival and one extra which is called the servant candle. Look at our models do you think they are good. Our planning skills are getting better.

Bat Walk 12.10.11

Tonight we all went on our bat walk with our families at the back of the Firth Kirk with Sue Whitworth. We had lots of fun in the the dark chasing each other pretending to be bats and moths. We heard two bats on the bat detectors and Nell's mum saw a bat. We had lots of fun as you can see from the pictures below. Sue made us hot chocolate and bat biscuits. They were yummy. Thanks Sue for a great night out in the dark.

Plan, Do and Review

Look at our pictures of our Plan, Do and Review session today. We had to carefully choose a partner or partners and produce a plan of what we wanted to make. We discussed with our team what we wanted to do then we had to decide what materials we were going to use and who was going to do what. It is quite hard because we don't always agree. This helps us to learn to work with other people. Mr Taylor says that learning to work together is an important skill to learn.
Tomorrow were are going to review on how we got on. What went well and what we could do better.

We have been learning about churches and the special features within them. We decided to use classroom furniture to make pews, font, lectern, altar, stained glass window and a pulpit. Here is a snapshot of what we did! I hope you enjoy!
